Life "below the waterline" in the cruise industry is anything but boring, but despite the ups and downs (and there are definitely a lot of both!), it is most certainly not without its rewards. "Where the Waves Take Me" is a peek into the world of a crew member on a cruise ship and her travels throughout the world. If you have ever traveled or spent time on a cruise ship yourself, you are sure to enjoy this touching, entertaining and at times hilarious glimpse at life 'below the waterline'. Reviews from previous editions "If you've ever been onboard a cruise ship and wondered what it would be like to travel, work and live like a crew member then this is the book for you. Brookes takes pen to paper to share her heartwarming personal stories of life working onboard.[. . .] The short story format makes it easy to pick up at any place and jump in, no matter how long of a hiatus from reading. It's an engaging tale to add to your "must read" list."

While it helps that I met the author on a cruise, this is an excellent read, part travel log, part diary. Whether I've been to the ports she describes or have not, her book is intriguing and vividly descriptive. While passengers tend to think life on board is nothing but glamour, Shaughnessy gives a realistic look at life at sea, from the fun and frivolous to the lonely and sad. Have ordered both books and am just starting the second one. As a longtime cruiser, I've often thought about the life of the staff and she helped me understand it.Product details

Excellent book describing life on a cruise ship! Reading, we visit all the countries and landmarks and amazing sights that otherwise, we may never dream of getting to on our own. Greatly enjoyed this book!
A book that has you giving that secret smile, laughing out loud, or wiping a tear away depending on the chapter you have just read. A true and real portrayal of ship life both below and above decks! Read it. Read it. Read it! Thank you Shaughnessy!
This is a great book for light reading. It's especially interesting if you've ever longed to be a free spirit, or know someone who is. Shaughnessy tells great stories and shares insights that will make you long for an adventuresome life as well as make you appreciate the stability of home being one (land-based) place.
Shaughnessy offers a fascinating insight into life as a crew member on a cruise ship. It's a delightful read and it will let you feel some of the emotions that arise in a world that few passengers see. I can't wait to read more from her !!
I met the author on our last cruise with Holland after having figured out who she was after encountering her in the ship library all the time. Her book was delightful and it was fun to try and figure out who the "characters" were. I learned a lot about the behind the scenes life of a cruise ship.
I enjoyed reading this book and being able to relate to "life below the waterline" as a former cruise line employee. It's a light, easy read with colorful descriptions of exotic ports for anyone with an adventurous side. Its a great peek into this life as well as these ports of call for anyone interested in musing about their past travels, looking forward to future travels or just looking to visit interesting places through good book.
In the form of a collection of journal entries, Where The Waves Take Me is a luxury cruise around the world from the perspective of one of the crew. The activities of each port, and many of the sea days, are described in rich detail, and the author's experiences are moving, insightful, and at times hilarious (watch out when you cross the equator!). This is a very personal narrative, and sometimes people, events, and shipboard duties are referenced with little explanation, but this is also part of the book's charm, as the reader is gleefully pulled along by the hand, like a friend who already knows the inconsequential details. Recommended for anyone considering working on a cruise ship, or wanting an unpretentious taste of international travel.
